Invokana Amputation
INVOKANA AMPUTATION
Modern medicine for decades has been lauded as a huge step forward for us all. Diseases which were once deadly can now be eradicated through the use of a vaccine. Unfortunately, not all medications have positive outlooks. Certain medications which may not have been fully tested can have devastating results on an individual.
INVOKANA
Invokana was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) in 2013 after its release by Janssen Pharmaceuticals. Highly lauded as a great option for diabetes sufferers, physicians were eager to recommend it, and insurance companies were eager to cover the drug.
However, the FDA recently issued warnings against the drug, noting that Invokana can cause a condition stemming from the body’s overproduction of ketones – ketoacidosis. Early signs of the resulting disease often require immediate medical attention and often hospitalization. Other side effects of Invokana include severe urinary tract infection, kidney failure and heart attack as well as an increase in the risk of leg or foot amputation. A recent study has indicated that the risk of amputation is 2-3 times higher for patients taking Invokana than patients not taking the drug.
AMPUTATION CLAIMS
Amputations resulting from Invokana are some of the most devastating injuries which can occur from the use of the drug. The recent FDA report is a troubling publication for users of Invokana who believed their use of the drug would lessen the more devastating symptoms which can occur with diabetes. Early Invokana studies indicated that there is an increased risk for amputations for patients consuming Invokana, although further research needs to be done to find a positive link between the drug and the amputations. However, patients must continue to be diligent and should consult an attorney if they have experienced an amputation or any serious side effects after beginning Invokana.
A victim of Invokana amputation may bring a claim for damages against the drug manufacturer, including the following:
- Medical expenses
- Rehabilitation
- Lost wages
- Future earnings
- Pain and suffering
