Cobalt International Energy L.P.
COBALT INTERNATIONAL ENERGY L.P.
Cobalt International Energy has made a name for itself as a pioneer in the oil exploration industry. The company has operations in the Gulf of Mexico and offshore West Africa and has made ten deepwater discoveries in these locations. While the company has been focused on oil exploration since its inception, it is beginning to move toward exploration and development.
HISTORY AND CURRENT OPERATIONS
Cobalt was founded in 2005 and incorporated in 2009. In just a short period of time, the company has discovered major offshore sites and has developed longstanding relationships with many of the big players in the industry. These early years have allowed the company to flourish and make a name for itself throughout the exploration industry. Cobalt has continued to be successful as an explorer and operator despite the recent economic downturn. The company remains committed to deepwater exploration, and while some of the exploratory efforts may be curbed as a result of the low price of oil, the young company still sits in a prominent role.
Cobalt continues to expand several of its deepwater operations, including the $150 million Heidelberg RBL facility in the Gulf of Mexico. The spar hull has been set and the mooring lines have been installed at this field, with production projected to begin in 2016. This facility will be able to produce up to 80.000 barrels of oil and 80 million cubic feet of gas per day. While the company is a non-operator, it does hold a nearly 10% working interest in this field.
The Anchor discovery near the Louisiana coast is projected to move forward later in 2015. The company owns approximately 20% non-operating working interest in the Anchor discovery unit. The company currently has active drilling activity in the North Platte #3 appraisal well and the Shenandoah #4 appraisal well. Cobalt is expecting to receive results from both wells by the end of 2015. As a young player to an industry full of giants, Cobalt has managed to assert itself and create a niche within the oil and gas industry.
